Ant said to Platt:
According to ZMM, every human endeavour is an art form that can be improved
on. ...Moreover, I think you're making beauty an ideal type of static
Platonic form which would put you outside the MOQ. Best wishes,
dmb says:
Yea, I think Platt's emphasis on the fine arts and beauty has the effect of
narrowing and even trivializing the MOQ's concepts of art, where physicists,
philosophers, motorcycle mechanics, Korean wall builders are supposed to be
artists too.
Its not that the fine arts are to be excluded, of course. The idea, I think,
is to bring the kind of creative engagement and interpretive freedom that
traditional associated with the fine arts and export that same attitude and
process to everything else we do. The ZAMM quote Arlo recently posted
describes it in mystical terms (tat tvam asi) and 1970s slang ("getting with
it" and "grooving on it"). It seems then that art is not a process nor the
artifacts produced by artists so much as a state of being.
