[hildebrand teaching]
"...no less pressing problem, namely, the
disconnection between academic philosophy and
society-at-large."
I took this quote from the downloaded article
somebody on the MOQ.org linked for us. I'm just
starting to read it, and this quote was taken from the
introduction. This quote alone shows me the problem
with the giant and how intellect is not able to guide
the social level of today's culture. If the intellect
was able to guide the social level, then a disconnect
would not be present. Philosophy is on the
intellectual level, and since philosophy does not have
much popular (Victorian) appraisement, then the
intellect has been closed from the population. Art,
music, and literature are upon the intellectual level,
and the door is closing upon them, too. I heard on
the news the other day that certain public schools in
an area are going to cancel sports to make more room
for $ to go to academic interests. That is the first
year in the plan. The second year, as part of the
plan, is to rid art and music from the curriculum to
again, further make room for more $ in what is
cultural thought of as the true education courses such
as math, reading, science, etc... These are also, by
the way, what are tested and required for schools to
show the best grades and scores to those that overlook
such requirements: namely the state and federal
government. High scores in these areas means the
schools are doing well according to current standards
set up by the states and federal government as far as
I know. When you take an SAT test, and all the other
tests now necessary, it is math, science, reading and
writing that are accounted for, right? Are there
other tests, such as for art? Who has the best
drawing? These were usually contests for those
interested, but not a requirement.
The intellectual level has been booted from the
social level. The disconnect continues. What kind of
job can a philosopher find? A government job would be
work, but would a government job, in a state building
or even running for office, work out? Would anybody
hire him/her? The philosophy must be plain-spoken,
straight forward, and easily reachable by the public.
The public must easily understand, and the philosopher
would need to refrain from long complex dialogues as
to reality is here and what reality is in the
Aristotelian way. Image standing upon a stage asking
the public to vote for a philosopher that says and
reality is made up of these forms that are archetypal,
etc..., and the philosopher would go on to say we must
convince others of this argument. It would benefit
the world. What does archetypal forms have to do with
the price of gas?
Also, what of advisers for governments, as
Confucius was for the emperor. Yet, what of Lao tzu
philosophers, Zen philosophers, or Christian monks who
refrain from directly involving themselves inside of
the government, but their ways do or can permeate
governments indirectly. So, whether it is inside of
the government in person or on the sidelines sounding
the trumpets. What of the Dali Lama who was appointed
head of state by the public, while the Dali Lama
himself keeps reminding people that he is just a
simple monk, and wants to not have the Dali Lama
position become a permanent state government position?
The Dali Lama would like to be able to practice
without having to be also a government leader. This
latter though, doesn't it reflect the intellectual
level in full dominance within Tibetan circles.
Tibetans look to this bright, intelligent person to
help lead them to a safe and stable society.
