[hildebrand teaching]
"...that philosophical insight proceeds only
vertically, that is, by logical inference and
argumentation, rather than laterally, that is, by
creative association, metaphor, and the imaginative
application of theory to practice. (Meaning extends no
further than its co-extension with truth.)
I pulled this quote from page four of the
teaching. So, is this what some here mean by
'lateral' thinking. This paper I'm reading on this
page discloses four problems and outcomes that
students of philosophy typically have, which from my
taking of three philosophy courses in college, I'd
agree by experience with these problems. No wonder my
'Social Philosophy' professor hid his answers, if I go
by what this author is stating. I had no idea what
this professor was trying to get to. What his point
was. Not until the end of the year did I understand
at least one thing, which he only kept repeating near
the end of the semester, which is he was just trying
to see what we thought. Yet, I wondered what did the
readings he gave us, and the teachings in the class
have to do with Social philosophy. What was this
course trying to say about society and what could I do
with these teachings and ideas within society. What
was the point of this class? What was it trying to
say? It's not that I didn't like the class. These
questions were not motivated by 'this class is dumb
and what use is it', but it was motivated more by the
professor would say things and it just seemed to come
out of nowhere. A disconnect existed in the class,
and I couldn't fit all the topics together, let alone
find application to what goal was being pointed to.
The professor would say so what is this person trying
to say, and how could this change society? I'm
thinking what don't we like now, and what would we
like to see changed. Yet, these were never talked
about. I guess what this hildebrand teaching is
pointing out in this section is philosophy isn't just
about a Truth and a Goal for everybody to understand
and once you know it - well, your in, you've got it.
Like secret esoteric teachings. Part of philosophy is
the dialogue, the communication of what's happening,
and to stimulate thought so we just don't do things
cause where told to do these things. As Pirsig noted,
to not let the giant gain strength and we just go
through the motions and before we know it honor and
popular belief leads nations into trench warfare (War
World One). It is not just about we are right and the
argument is to defeat all in its' path. It is
dialogue and if we value the discussion and any
intellectual patterns, well, we value them, but we're
still open to change (dq). Keeping the discussing
going is part of what philosophy is. No absolute
truth or absolute idea is trying to be achieved
somewhere out-there in archetypal world. Exploration,
thought-experiment, is safe and the value is built
upon and thus, grows from inorganic to social levels,
then the intellectual value is rooted with and grows
from these levels, thus making the intellectual value
practical. The intellectual value can't come from
anywhere other than static patterns, and the knowing
of dq (openness, change, etc...) makes these static
patterns flexible. To value an intellect that is
alert of the other levels and dq and an intellect that
knows which patterns to focus upon or understanding of
how dq helps is an intellect not off on a disconnected
tangent. What else, according to the MoQ, could
intellect value? Thus, social issues, organic and
inorganic issues, along with openness and flexibility
and intellects approach to these levels and dq, what
else is there? The MoQ connects the intellect with
society, biology, atoms, code of art (art, music,
etc... this dynamic edge of experience), as primary
reality (dq) made static. I feel like I'm getting
something here. Something's clicking about this MOQ.
