It would seem philosophy is not so much about
'What is Truth?', but it is about 'Why are we asking
such a question?'. What assumption, understanding,
motivation, or thinking in general is going on to lead
us to ask such a question. According to Dewey, in
this article, philosophy does not donate Truth, but is
the recipient of Truth, thus, also Truth is ? due to
ever-encouraged dialogue. Marsha, are you talking
about this in your quest to understand knowledge, and
I quote from the article as follows:
"Such an attitude emphasizes that knowledge is
both social and open to criticism, and promotes the
idea that success in philosophy lies less in the
issues that have been settled, resolved, in effect
closed, than in the questions philosophy continues to
keep alive and insistent."
Here knowledge is said to be social. I would say
'just socializing' is social level, whereas what
happens during the socializing, such as a discussion,
this involves the intellectual level. In 'just
socializing' I'm saying, pointing out that a social
discussion is happening is the intellect pointing this
out, but it is the intellect pointing out a social
level activity. What is discussed and the discussion
involves the intellectual level, thus, this a social
activity that involves the intellectual level. I
believe this clarifies the quote above.
What do you think?
hot, very humid and hot,
