Dear Charlotte;
I work with the spider family Trechaleidae, especially with the
/Paratrechalea/ genus, using GM landmarks.
As you have notice, there are few works on the subject available, but as
Andrea Cardini said, there are severall works with insects, which are of
great help.
Besides Crews & Hedin (2006), there is this other paper:
Bond J.E. & Beamer D.A. (2006). A morphometric analysis of mygalomorph
spider carapace shape and its efficacy as a phylogenetic character
(Araneae). Invertebrate Systematics 20: 1-7.

About the scale problem, I take all the pictures by connecting my camera
in the stereomicroscope, using the eyepiece scale as a reference.
Preliminary tests showed strong consistence on the measurements.

Cheers!
