Subject: Morpheus et al., Java Edition - public release
      To: morphmet <morphmet@morphometrics.org>

Dear Morphmetters,

I am pleased to announce, at long last, the first official public
release of Morpheus et al., Java Edition. It can be downloaded from:

http://morphlab.sc.fsu.edu/software.html

It is known to run on Mac OS X systems, Linux, Windows 7 and XP.

To install the program, simply download the latest .zip file and unzip
it. To run the program use the operating-system-specific scripts
described on the above page. These allocate additional memory for the
program and ensure it executes from its own directory.

PREREQUISITES

Any recent Intel-based computer running Mac OS X, Linux, or Windows with
a recent version of Java installed and openGL 1.2 support.

NOTES:

- All users must have a recent version of Java installed.

- Windows users must have an up-to-date graphics driver for their
display hardware to supply the requisite openGL version.

- The same can probably be said for Linux users, but we don't have any
bare installs to test. It runs for all of our Linux boxes.

- Mac users *MUST* execute the "mac_os_x_prepare" script to hide some
outdated system files (Java3D) that are included with the OS. This
requires administrative permission (files are in the
/System/Library/Java/Extensions directory) and needs to be done before
the program is run the first time and after each os upgrade.

- The Mac scripts (preparation or execution) don't appear to work on OS
10.6. The easy solution is to upgrade to 10.8. Don't have a 10.7 system
to test.

- The whole Morpheus directory may be moved to any convenient location.
However, the executions scripts *MUST NOT BE MOVED* from that directory!
To create convenient shortcuts, create links to the scripts and move
those links.

- MORPHMET is probably the best venue for initial support. That way, all
members can see any issues that arise or problems that are solved and
can contribute to those solutions. It would be best to start related
messages with the subject "Morpheus: ..." so that they might be more
easily identified.

- There is an extensive user's manual in the distribution directory.

Enjoy, Dennis E. Slice
