Hi Bill, Good for you for bringing in movies into comprehension! I would suggest taking baby steps - maybe starting with movies that capture their interests, so perhaps asking them what kind of movies they like and finding one that is appropriate to share in class. I would also teach reading strategies such as predicting, questioning, visualizing, summarizing one at a time and start with you modeling it through a read aloud. Again, it should be something that interests them or is connected to issues surrounding their world. I think these kids could use some help with learning how to summarize small chunks, rather than waiting until the end of the movie to summarize it. Perhaps using graphic organizers and modeling how to summarize throughout the text / movie would be helpful?
