In years of working with this assessment, I can say there was a time when
our kinders were not assessed with DRA until May of their first year. Since
those early levels are far more about book handling skills and concepts of
print, many --including myself--felt this was a mistake. The testing was
then changed to begin testing mid-year and then end of year. Seemed to give
us a bit more information. I know that that jump from level three to four
is a big one. At that point, children really need to attend to print far
more closely.
