In years of working with this assessment, I can say there was a time when our kinders were not assessed with DRA until May of their first year. Since those early levels are far more about book handling skills and concepts of print, many --including myself--felt this was a mistake. The testing was then changed to begin testing mid-year and then end of year. Seemed to give us a bit more information. I know that that jump from level three to four is a big one. At that point, children really need to attend to print far more closely.
