These read alouds were huge hits in my fifth grade class: The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau and the The People of Sparks (People of Sparks was the sequel. I didn't have time to read it to my class but several picked it up after I read the City of Ember to them. It's a great book). The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster The Witch's Boy by Micahel Gruber (great for discussing text-to-text connections)
