These read alouds were huge hits in my fifth grade class:

The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau and the The People of Sparks (People of
Sparks was the sequel.  I didn't have time to read it to my class but
several picked it up after I read the City of Ember to them.  It's a great
book).
The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster
The Witch's Boy by Micahel Gruber (great for discussing text-to-text
connections)
