I used to think there was not a lot teachers could do about changing the system, but I have changed my mind on that. It simply takes the recognition that there is something that needs to be changed, the will to stand up and refuse to do what's bad for kids (and this is much easier when you are working under union protection), and the ability to stick together as teachers in supporting academic freedom. It also takes some research and education regarding how research is done, who does it, how results are interpreted, and how selected research is chosen by those who are in power. Reading comprehension is on the line. Teachers have more power than they sometimes think.
