You have to change their thinking...
We (another Teacher and I) worked in a reading program where we supervised 6
TAs. We found that most TAs came with traditional ideas about education
(essentially how they were taught). I found that the only way to move them
is to provide staff development and change their thinking- which is what we
did- every time our district had a staff development day- we worked with the
TAs and trained them in how to work with and prompt kids while reading. We
also did lots of modelling for them and explained the theory/rationale
behind what we were doing. The TAs became learners and they were excellent
when they worked with kids.
Also, one reason we have moved away from round robin reading is that we want
the kids to construct an entire story in their head as they read- which is
what readers do- we do not want them reading a paragraph or two and then
listening to other children read the rest of the passage.
