Bahiyh, I work in a school with the population exactly like what you described (100% low income, 80% of my students are ELL). The thing with these students is you need to build background knowledge a bit longer and more than you would students in higher SES schools. For example, before I even begin to read a new novel, I do at least 2 weeks of inquiry. During this phase they are reading articles, easier picture books, watching videos, doing internet research or virtual fieldtrips, having conversations, doing hands on projects, showing pictures, building new vocabulary, and most importantly, giving them something from their own cultures that they can relate this new content to. Hope this helps!
