I think what has helped me most is to kind of get over my preconceived
notions about prior knowledge. I used to go through a book and assume that
I knew what a child or group of children might not know, thinking THIS is
what I need to plant. My kids kept proving me wrong--knowing things I never
thought they would and then needing schema support in areas that seemed
obvious to me.

Text Mapping (Dave Middlebrook) and approach this as group activity really
helped me. The idea that a picture walk can really be a picture walk was
awesome. In text mapping, a scroll is created by taping together
photocopied pages from a book or section of a book. I always mounted mine
on 18-inch butcher paper, to provide more margin. When I asked kids to use
their schema, working in groups, I found the power of numbers. When it
comes to schema, three heads are better than one. They activate one
another, and when several groups have an opportunity to work through the
same text, color coding helps me narrow down teaching points and make
decisions about a whole group lesson vs. a targeted strategic group session.
