Maxine, 
  I'm no expert (as you all know!), but I've seen this work wonders with a 
Chinese student I had both in second and fourth grade. She was very lucky that 
a friend of mine tutored her, and she used the Language Experience approach in 
addition to what I did in class. Her daughter was in the class too, so they 
became fast friends. It also helped that her parents were very supportive of 
everything we did with her. Amazing what can happen when a child has people 
encircle them. Sure wish every child could have this girl's experience.
