I posted earlier RE "testing" for ADHD, but must have deleted my post, so will respond on this one. In my state as well, ADHD is a medical diagnosis, not an educational diagnosis. The physician often uses Conner's scales for teachers, parents, child care providers, coaches, and others, so that the child's behavior in several settings is known. Also, the test that I referred to in my earlier post is the TOVA (test of variable attention) and it is often administered by a psychologist, although a range of people may do so, including the pediatrician or other physician. It is not a stand-alone test by any means! At any rate, professional standards for pediatricians "require" that data from multiple sources be used for diagnosis, which pretty much eliminates the case where a parent comes in and demands the diagnosis and the physician just signs on the dotted line. Well, in theory at least. We all know practice can be far different. There are actually two TOVAs, one for auditory and one for visual, and I think they are regarded well as ONE PIECE of information which can be used to determine ADHD, but one piece only. In addition, as several posters have touched upon, in order for a child to receive SPED services, ADHD or no, he needs to have academic difficulties because of the condition. So ... that's my two cents. Bev
