I've read Tim Rasinski's book, The Fluent Reader, and found some very helpful,
research based, strategies you can use to help your students. I'd reccomend you
get his book so you can read all the details. Here are three simplified
explanations of three strategies:
Repeated reading through listening: students read aloud while listening to a
recorded version of their book. They read repeatedly until they can match the
tape.
Partner reading: students read with a proficient partner. Both partners read
aloud simultaneously. The student gently nudges their partner when they need
them to slow down to pronounce a word, and gently nudges them twice if they
want to take over.
Radio reading. The student repeatedly reads the text while trying to mimic a
radio or television announcer/reporter. I call it reading like Dan Rather.
Hope this helps.
