Lauren, When I was a middle school reading intervention teacher I used Reading Advantage from Great Source. It is a magazine format which the students really loved. The magazines include not only articles, but poetry, plays, emails, diaries, etc. The teacher's manuals cover the comprehension strategies of prediction, summarizing, visualization, questioning and making inferences. They are user friendly and have a section for struggling students. There is a placement test and Level A is about second/third grade level. My sixth graders started with this level. Google Great Source and check it out.
