hi, beth and colleagues... part of the problem i see in my classroom with parents is that they don't have the skills themselves, nor the reading strategies in place with which to help their own kids. at our back-to-school orientation and at parent-teacher conferences, i offer a hand-out with reading "tips" parents can try at home. (most of the parents in my class won't spend the time, but i keep trying!)
among the strategies i suggest (with specific questions/examples) include: main idea (think about the WHOLE story; what is the story about?) recall facts and details (ask the 5 w's and how) understand sequence (retell the story across 5 fingers - first, then, next, after, finally) recognize cause & effect (cause: why did the event happen? effect: what happened) making predictions (what will happen later? why do you think so) author's purpose (why did the author write this piece? entertain, inform, persuade) i hope this is of some use to you. marlene _______________________________________________ Mosaic mailing list [email protected] To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org.
