This is a book most of the 5th grade teachers in my building teach. Many start with some short stories on survival before jumping into the book. There's a neat one in Guys Write for Guys Read called "The Crossing" by T.A. Barron. It really drives the idea of survival home. A couple of the focuses they have with this book is character development, because Brian changes so much both physically and mentally through the book. You can have the kids make a "changing strip". Accordion fold a piece of large construction paper. They start the book with a picture of Brian - before he leaves on the plane. They use Paulsen's own words to aid them in making the appearance as accurate as possible. Under the picture, the students write a paragraph focused around a character trait that best describes Brian. They have to give examples from the text. Another teacher uses his Boy Scouts handbook to talk about many different survival skills necessary for Brian to survive (i.e. building a shelter, a fire, etc.) Most teachers use the book to teach rising action, climax, and falling action. Also, many teachers teach problem and solution since the book is flooded with them.
