I use Hatchet with my special needs 6th graders as a part of a courage
theme. Prior to Hatchet we read some stories about careers that require
courage
such as Firefighters and some short biographies of folks who display a lot of
courage in adverse circumstances. I have done a lot of different things with
the book and each year adds a few more. We read aloud part of the book.
Some chapters we do as lit circles. WE do lot and lots of drawing to check
for
understanding. We do lots of turn and talk and use lots of QAR. Generally
we use small bits of the movie based on Hatchet as we read to compare and
contrast. Also Hatchet provides multiple opportunities for addressing antonyms
and synonyms which are a part of our core content for sixth grade. it is a
great book for making connections as an earlier poster suggested because the
overwhelming majority of my students have also faced major family turmoil.

I have gotten information packets from the Red Cross to tie in the emergency
preparedness factor. This also ties into our science themes for sixth grade
in the study of living things and their need for survival. My students
prepare an emergency survival kit. I have used Inspiration software to create
different types of webs, checks for understanding etc. because of their
graphics.

Best wishes,
