First, let me say that I don't use DIBELS for reasons I won't get into here
since the pros and cons of this assessment have been argued here many, many
times before.

When thinking about the 35th percentile...or percentiles in general,
remember that you are operating on a bell curve. The thirty-fifth percentile is
 well
within the average range. My special education kids have to be below the
25th percentile many times to be even considered for services since the 25th is

the bottom of the average range.

I guess what I am saying is that DIBELS is supposed to identify those most
at risk. It is unlikely that kids who are in the 35th to 40th percentile are
really at risk. They are average kids...at the bottom of the average range
for sure, but average nonetheless.

I didn't realize that the benchmarks set for DIBELS are only at the 35%ile.
I wonder why they wouldn't set them higher than that because they seem kind
of low to me. Does anyone know what the 50%ile is for the end of the year
benchmarks for 4th and 5th grades?
