Carol,

I was referring to Classroom Instruction That Works. The authors are Marzano,
Pickering, and Pollock. There are 9 strategies they refer to. Some are
cognitive others are management oriented and some have to do with getting
students to engage successfully. He also has a website(sorry don't remember
the address) where there are references to instruction and different forms of
assessment. Reading his book has not really changed how I think about my
reading instruction but has made me think really hard about math science and
social studies. Like where when and what I have them practice to get my
students to a point of mastery. Also about how many times a student needs to
experience information before they "know" it, and having them experience it in
different contexts( which relates very much to what Art Hyde say in his math
book ?Comprehending Math?). My reading has made me question recall as a lower
thinking skill. We think it is when we are looking at the context of what we
expect of our students but what they have to do cognitively to get that
information into their brains and then be able to locate with in the context of
the situation they are expected to recall it in is a lot more complex than we
think it is.

Wow this is longer than I meant it to be and a lot more rambling. Sorry.
