At the risk of oversimplifying, an interactive read-aloud is so open-ended that you can scaffold new instruction from kids' responses in order to provide more or less guidance as necessary. If it's great literature you're reading, rarely do kids become bored from too little or too much understanding; they simply take what is offered to them. You structure the discussion in order to differentiate.
