While reading Amy's response about RM, I am saddened for all young
children who may be receiving RM as their primary source of reading
instruction. I cannot believe that text is exclusive on pages (
pictures "hidden from them" and later shown for enjoyment) without
picture support at such an early stage in literacy development. Were
not most of us born into this world, unable to read print, yet
developed an understanding of language by hearing spoken language and
being stimulated by visual images. A vast majority of my world is
visual. The viewing of the world (visual images) supports early
learning (building of schema) in the process of making sense of
(understanding) text that is eventually attached to it. In early
learning, children need both pictures and text together to make
meaning. Perhaps RM, used as an intervention source would benefit some
individuals, an intervention . . . not the only diet.
Having read, reread, and continuing to reference, both editions of
Mosaic of Thought, 7 Keys to Comprehension, To Understand, Reading for
Meaning, Teaching with Intention, and other professional text on the
teaching of Thinking Strategies in a Balanced Literacy Workshop Model,
I could not and would not support scripted, instruction for my
students, my own children or all others. Having attended several
professional workshops with such presenters as Margaret Mooney, Regi
Routman, Ellin Keene, Debbie Miller and others from Denver and
participated in a Thinking Strategies Institute in Denver, I am
convinced I am on the right path in my quest to provide young children
the best practices, supported by current and accurate research. I am
not an expert, I am on a learning journey as are my students. If
confronted with such programs, I know it is my responsibility to them
to stand up and sing their praises . . . students first!
As I confer with students, I can determine their strengths, their
specific needs, and provide appropriate instruction with the use of a
variety of resources and strategies, without the need for scripted
curriculum. I know I was called to this profession to teach children,
not programs. I am grateful I work in a District that embraces this
philosophy and recognizes appropriate practices.
