Less is More is an excellent resource. I read the book last year and then got the book for my 7th and 8th grade teachers this year. They are finding it to be a very valuable resource. I also hunted down a number of the resources that the author uses as examples for our lending library. The book makes the connection between reading and writing and also shows you how to teach the same thing without having the kids read volumes so more can be covered. There is a whole chapter on essay writing. Kimberly Hill Campbell (the author) cites lists of books that can be used for teaching essay writing and within that she refers to specific types of essays (essays on books and reading, on writing, on nature, on issues, and on and on!) she expands on certain teaching strategies and they link to essay writing, and she talks about literary craft in essays.
