I think anyone interested in helping kids at the particular spelling stage they are at will find Kathy Ganske's book exceptional. We are using word journeys in my Middle School...at a Middle School level there are some issues but we have worked them out. The cost of the program is really only buying the book. I just purchased the new book Mindful of Words spelling and Vocabulary Explorations 4-8 but I haven't had a chance to look at it yet. Studying the book takes some time and you probably wouldn't jump right in to it all at once. It is something you can ease into. I am not that fond of Words Their Way. I like making up my own sorts and building on them. If you read the Word Journeys book by Kathy Ganske you can get started. We have seen progress in our students the last two years that we have really been using it. Check it out if you haven't heard of it before. It may just be the Word study component that you are missing with workshop. It certainly beats memorizing word lists and having every student doing the same thing.
