Isbelle Beck's book Bringing Words to LIfe is a helpful tool. A Quick
read--broken down by grade level clumps that stand alone pretty well.

The first few chapters describe the different levels of vocabulary and where to
focus one's teaching. It's a skinny book--if that helps those of you who are
time crunched!

It doesn't support spelling instruction specifically though--The focus is on
vocabulary development.

Words their Way has its pros and cons. The con is that it can be time
consuming. And the teachers I have spoken with have had trouble getting the
kids to successfully remember the rules they discovered through the sorts.
Having said that--as a source for spelling instruction and research, the book
is very helpful.
