You might want to take a look at "The Book Whisperer" by Donalyn Miller. She teaches sixth grade, and while I think she has a longer lit block than you do, she does outline how self-selected reading is a huge part of her program. Perhaps you can adapt some of her ideas to your situation. I really loved the book. (It was even in my public library!)
