If I can add my two cents, I agree with Adrienne. I have been in the
field over 30 years and there are countless benefits to reading aloud to
students, as well as to our own precious kids.
When working with remedial students, they are introduced to advanced
vocabulary, and they have the opportunity to experience fluent reading. If I
read to them after lunch or before the end of school I found it also calmed
them down, as they became a captive audience!
When my two grown kids were little, it was a nightly ritual. They loved
to be read to and they thrived on it! As they got older, we read chapter
books together, followed by thoughtful discussions. Since I was a stay at
home mom for many of those years, they were my ONLY students, so that time
together made it all the more meaningful.

I've taught for 31 years and raised 4 children--reading aloud is VERY
important-I've taught K-3rd and read aloud time in my classroom is sacred.
It was also one of my favorite times with my own children.
