Hi Leslie,
Only the kindergarten teachers and me do writers' workshop. In fact, I had
more grade one students signing up for writing club than any other grade.
Often teachers will say they don't have time to carve out 3 periods a week for
writers' workshop - to me this would be a minimum. However, there is interest
and I did a 3-session series after school in the spring for those teachers who
were interested. My purpose in starting a writing club was initially selfish:
I wanted to keep working with the kids I'd had in previous years and I wanted
to expose other kids to the joy of a writing club modelled on writing workshop.
I'm hoping that the kids will go back to their teachers and ask if they can do
more writing and that this will have a snowball effect of sorts. We'll see.

Can you say a little more about your writing clubs, please? Does your
school follow a writers workshop model? If so, will the writing clubs support
the work that's going on in the classroom.
