I really like the Alex Rider series starting with Stormbreaker. other books I
have had good luck with are Harris and Me, Otis Spofford, and The Pinballs. If
they like Fantasy I read the first book in the Ranger's Apprentice series this
summer and thought it would be a good choice for reluctant readers/

Hi,
??I am teaching comprehension strategies to a group of fifth graders. ?They
seem to be abandoning more books than they are reading to completion. ?In
"Outliers," Malcolm Gladwell writes about 10,000 hours of practice as one of
the keys to success. ?I know that my students are not getting enough real
reading practice. ?Does anyone have any book suggestions for reluctant readers
of this age? ?They tend to choose books from series such as "Bones," "Diary of
a Wimpy Kid," and "Series of Unfortunate Events." ?Their comprehension is
slightly below grade level. ?I would love to put engaging, high-quality books
in their hands that they love so much they can't stop reading! ?Thanks for your
help with this endeavor. ?Susan ?MD

The City of Ember series caught a few of mine...the Warriors series is another
and the Guardians of Gahoul...

I believe it might be Fountqs and Pinnell who advocated children writing to
explain WHY they were abandoning books. I do know that when a third grade
colleague tried this with a group of book-bouncers two things happened. She
gained insight into the reasons children were abandoning books, helping her
guide readers more effectively. Perhaps because the chore of justification was
such a bother, fewer kids abandoned books.

Anyone have any advice on the best way to give teacher made vocabulary
tests. I want it to be more than just matching definitions and was wondering
what other teachers use as a vocabulary assessment.

Thanks

I've always like having the students create a sentence using the word. That
allows you to know if they truly understand the meaning of the word. Also gives
you an idea about mechanics as well, which you can grade separately.

For any word that's appropriate (and most are), why not have students
draw a picture that shows the meaning of the word? I've done this and
in addition to tapping into the strengths of students who are visual
learners, it gives students a little time to think creatively.

Deep down we must have real affection for each other, a clear
realization or recognition of our shared human status. At the same
time, we must openly accept all ideologies and systems as a means of
solving humanity's problems. One country, one nation, one ideology,
one system is not sufficient.
~ The Dalai Lama
