Sorry--I've been slow to read my messages recently, so maybe other people have
already said this--
I recently read Notebook Connections: Strategies for the Reader's Notebook by
Aimee Buckner (which I loved). One of the ideas she gave for a discussion to
have with the class (with a follow up of writing about it in the reader's
notebook) is to talk about "what keeps us reading".
Could it be helpful to talk with your class about times they haven't abandoned
books, and what they did when they got to less exciting parts/more confusing
parts of those books?

One book (unfortunately not part of a series) that passed around like wildfire
in my room the last couple of years is The Giggler Treatment by Roddy Doyle.
Short chapters and a lot of humor. (I think there's a second book, titled
Rover Saves Christmas, which is by the author and similar, though you don't
need to read one before the other.)

Hi,
??I am teaching comprehension strategies to a group of fifth graders. ?They
seem to be abandoning more books than they are reading to completion. ?In
"Outliers," Malcolm Gladwell writes about 10,000 hours of practice as one of
the keys to success. ?I know that my students are not getting enough real
reading practice. ?Does anyone have any book suggestions for reluctant readers
of this age? ?They tend to choose books from series such as "Bones," "Diary of
a Wimpy Kid," and "Series of Unfortunate Events." ?Their comprehension is
slightly below grade level. ?I would love to put engaging, high-quality books
in their hands that they love so much they can't stop reading! ?Thanks for your
help with this endeavor. ?Susan ?MD
