I like to do author studies during weeks like that. The students can read online biographies about the author, do several read alouds and compare the characters and themes across texts. It's easy to plan, and does not require a lot of materials, other than the books and paper! We're doing one this week about Patricia Polacco. You can find many resources on: http://www.patriciapolacco.com/
