I am currently using it with second grade and, while it is my first year using
the program, find it to be quite effective. It is comprehensive, including the
key elements of good guided reading. The books are excellent - a good mix of
fiction and non-fiction. The students really like the books and want to read
them repeatedly. The only drawback for our specific situation is that each
lesson needs to be 30 minutes long with a maximum of 3 students (ideally). I
tried to do it with four students and found it did not work well, even though I
thought, during the training, that the presenter was overstating the importance
of this guideline. I realize Reading Recovery lessons are already 30 minutes
long, so that might not be an issue for you. For us, we work in 20-25 minute
rotations and found that we had to restructure our entire guided reading block
to make LLI work for a small group of struggling students. It ended up working
out well, but was a challenge at first.

Everyone in our district using it has given it a thumbs-up so far.
Kindergarten has been the only concern as teachers find it difficult to
implement without support in the classroom. In our building, Title teachers
are delivering LLI to kindergarten.

Hope this helps. It was interesting to read your post as it is a "quiet fear"
in our district that LLI might replace Reading Recovery. Budget cuts are
causing lots of fears and concerns all over the place!

Subject: [MOSAIC] leveled literacy intervention

I am wondering if there is anyone who has used leveled literacy instruction
LLI)? I am training for Reading Recovery this year and my school will not be
ontinuing this program next year in order to meet the needs of more students.
nstead they are hoping to use the RR strategies with more students. LLI seems
o be very similar in parts. Has anyone used this? Is it effective?
