I work as an Educational Consultant for a publishing company. In my travels all over the country, I have found that Reading Recovery Teachers and Reading Specialists do not love the program. They feel constrained by it and do not feel they have any instructional decision making say in the process. They also believe that they are not necessarily matching assessment to instruction. However, they do acknowledge the positive aspects of the program.
It is very RR in its orientation. That is true. However, everyone tells me that it can not be done in thirty minutes. This is where some decision making comes into play. Also, districts tell me it is hard to keep it to three students as they may have to pull from different classes at the same time. Scheduling can be difficult. I think a maximum of three is a tremendous plus. Also the teachers tell me that the students will proceed through the books in one level and NOT be ready for the next level. But by having various levels in one school, they can go to other LLI kits and pull from there. However, the District Coordinators and Title 1 Coordinators that I talk to feel it provides a consistency that may have been lacking before. They feel that Title and/or Basic Skills Teachers all have various levels of expertise. It depends on the district. In this way, it is their belief they have some control that all the at-risk students are receiving the same intensive intervention instruction and programming. These are good things to know when it comes down to decision making time. It is a very good program. It takes awhile to learn all the components of it but once that is mastered, it runs smoothly. Many materials come with the 3 Kits along with a DVD that you use to print out various activities for the lessons. The kids enjoy the books The binders with the lesson plans in them are well written. There are several additional teacher books that go over the program. What I like best is the fact that I work with only 3 students at a time in my reading groups. Most of my groups in the past were 4-5 students. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Jeana Wise Sent: Friday, February 19, 2010 6:31 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [MOSAIC] leveled literacy intervention I am wondering if there is anyone who has used leveled literacy instruction (LLI)? I am training for Reading Recovery this year and my school will not be continuing this program next year in order to meet the needs of more students. Instead they are hoping to use the RR strategies with more students. LLI seems to be very similar in parts. Has anyone used this? Is it effective? <http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ala n.pipes/pix/owl_t.jpg&imgrefurl=http://homepage.ntlworld.com/alan.pipes/ vector.html&h=150&w=150&sz=11&hl=en&sig2=ThfRUpfK9fHyhMx4U3qM7Q&start=19 &tbnid=vG7bH0vq0lf9zM:&tbnh=96&tbnw=96&ei=ta4uReiZOqHIaMypzcoM&prev=/ima ges%3Fq%3Dowl%2Bmascot%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D> Jeana Wise First Grade Benton Elementary [email protected] _______________________________________________ Mosaic mailing list [email protected] To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org.
