Building fluency...Doing reader's theater helps and kids like it I was
wondering if someone could email me just what the basic procedure is for Read
Naturally.

Does anyone know of an intervention program proven to improve fluency in
upper elementary grades? Right now we have Soar to Success and Great Leaps.
But, these programs aren't helping our 4th/5th grade fluency. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Jenni

Reader's theatre and 'just right books' are the key.

Don't know that I ever thought I would be suggesting this, but having spent a
few days working with a group of struggling 5th grade readers, I would say that
Read Naturally is not too bad. I feel quickly compelled to say that this
program is being used 20 minutes daily as a part of a larger plan BUT, as far
as canned interventions go, I see merits. I will also share concerns voiced to
me, or my own concerns.
Merits:
Focuses on more than speedRequires multiple readings of passagesPassages vary
in genre, but seemed to me to be nonfiction heavyProvides practice for written
retell, but requires deeper understanding10 or comprehension questions that
include written response/higher level thinkingTeacher listens to read for
fluencyTeacher ranks expression as part of fluency
Concerns:
Students using it more than 3x weekly seem to get bored with it (voiced)In
order to pass, students can have no more than 3 miscues (Mine)Because of the
adult needing to listen, more than one adult must be present in lab even with a
group of 11 or so kids (mine)Adults working in lab are not required to have any
experience with miscue or running records, so all errors sound the same (mine)

As much as I agree with this statement, having worked in a district with a
large number of struggling/striving readers, fluency is harder to address with
older readers. For some, dysfluency has become a matter of habit and habits
can be hard to break.

My school district has also used Read Naturally, Quick Reads, and
Fluency First.

I personally have not found anything that seems to work but we use RAZ KIDS and
Read Naturally. I believe Read Naturally has scientific research behind it.

With all due respect, I don't think any "program" is better than just
having children read, read, read, books that are easy enough for them
that they don't get hung up on vocabulary or other challenging issues.
Books that they have already read.

It costs nothing.

We have had some success with a program that we found on-line from the
Florida Center for Reading Research...It is a set of center activities for
grades 4-5 that we have been using as RtI interventions

I'm concerned that we seem to be looking for "quick fixes" to help struggling
readers. My experiences tell me that a "quick fix" or a "program" doesn't
exist.

It's about "assessment, diagnosis, and prescription" for struggling readers.
Providing background information, building vocabulary, developing comprehension
strategies, using graphic organizers, help to give the readers needed
information and a means to engage with the text for comprehension.

Reading is all about comprehension and developing strategies to assist in
comprehension helps readers. Fluency is fine but reading fluency doesn't add
much to interacting with text in order to understand it better.

By the way, I've just joined MOSIAC and I love reading and LEARNING much from
all your emails.

I have to agree that, for most students, wide reading of "just-right" or even
slightly easy text will work wonders. BUT, there is always a small group of
kids who need a more explicit intervention, whether we like it or not. I have
teachers using Read Naturally and the students do seem to benefit from it and
enjoy doing it. The teachers see the pay-off, otherwise they wouldn't continue
using it, but every one of them emphasizes that it is only for a small group of
students, carefully selected, for whom other things (readers theater, choral
reading, etc.) has been unsuccessful.

My school has not used this program yet, but another school in our district has
tried the Rewards Program. This is for 5-6 grade students, I believe. While
the person who implemented the program admits it's not overly stimulating for
the students, it did make a difference in their fluency. It is a short-term
program done daily. I found some information on the program on the FCRR.org
web site (Florida Center for Reading Research).

Again, nothing beats tons of reading to build fluency, but for the student who
is not a fluent reader, chances are reading has become a chore and something he
or she avoids. We have to actively work, using the tools we have to work with,
to rebuild their confidence and to help them view themselves as productive
readers. I also agree, however, that these fluency interventions need to be a
part of a comprehensive instructional program, not something done in isolation!
