Hi Megan, Judy, and everyone else,

Honestly, when I went through teacher training just ten years ago I learned
a little bit of everything, but nothing about the "how" to teach children to
read and write. Not the part of how to do readers/writers workshop with kids
who already know how to read a simple book or already know how to write a
sentence. Unfortunately in the United States today, teaching the "how" of
reading, handwriting, writing is abysmal.

These basic skills when left unattended leave children vulnerable to low
self-esteem, behavior acting-out that is misunderstood and mislabeled, and
all kinds of negative behavior. When an underlying learning challenge is not
uncovered until 3rd grade, the "gap" is so big that chances are the child is
turned off to learning for good.

Judy - if you were to encourage your friend to read up and have a basic plan
of attack for helping those kids that will come to her without knowing how
to write their letters, without phonemic awareness strengths, how to teach
phonics in a fun and multi-sensory way, etcetera --- her first year as a
teacher will be happier and healthier for everyone.

I wish her all the luck in the world, she's lucky to have you on her side!

Christina
