For myself, I feel like kids need a balance. Lots of self-selected reading but "making it count" by using strategies like those suggested by Atwell or by Franki Sibberson for workshop time. NOT book reports or reading logs but a fair amount of reflecting on their own reading choices, process etc. I really liked the reading dialogue letters once a week - written conversations. In other words, I want kids to know independent reading "counts" (is important) but I don't want to load that part of the curriculum up with assignments.
Then I would use short stories, essays, poetry etc. to teach strategies in whole class kind of lessons. Know A LOT more now than I did in my secondary teaching days. But I do believe in that modeling and guided release model. And the value of hearing from each other. Third I would have them apply the strategies in literature study groups - not the formulaic necessarily roles that began that approach but loosely. Again I really like what Atwell does and Chris and others. Sally On 7/17/11 6:07 PM, "K.
