Totally agree with this. You really have to pump up the books. I am reading the book whisperer by donnalynne miller (not sure on first name) who is a 6th grade teacher. Also have them discuss what they are reading in class if you don't have enough/alot of time just do it for like 5 minutes. Miller also gives her class time to read their books in class. Also talk about your reading since you are the "mentor" they hav for reading. I have the same problem with my students in 2nd/3rd grade and will be trying some of Miller's suggestions this year because reading at home is essential for becoming better readers.
