I teach grade 2 as well and I'm wondering which of Donalyn's ideas you are
going to adapt for your students for home reading?
Thanks for sharing,

The society which scorns excellence in plumbing as a humble activity and
tolerates shoddiness in philosophy because it is an exalted activity will have
neither good plumbing nor good philosophy: neither its pipes nor its theories

Totally agree with this. You really have to pump up the books. I am reading the
book whisperer by donnalynne miller (not sure on first name) who is a 6th grade
teacher. Also have them discuss what they are reading in class if you don't
have
enough/alot of time just do it for like 5 minutes. Miller also gives her
class time to read their books in class. Also talk about your reading since you
are the "mentor" they hav for reading.  I have the same problem with my
students
in 2nd/3rd grade and will be trying some of Miller's suggestions this year
because reading at home is essential for becoming better readers.
