A colleague of mine shared what she does to facilitate the DRAs going more 
quickly (this is at the higher level, where kids write their answers 
themselves)--she does the running record portion for each student, then says to 
the student, "I'm going to have you come back to this book again soon."  When 
she's done the running record with everyone, she gives everyone in class the 
book they did the running record from and has them all do the reading and the 
writing at the same time.  It still takes a long block of time, but at least 
it's just one long block of time instead of several days of a few kids at a 
time needing a long stretch of time.
