I had a selective mute about 13 years ago when I didn't know about selective mutes! she never spoke to me, I too assessed her through mom. I would train mom on the assessment and then observed her while mom gave assessment. I heard her read to mom on a daily basis since parents came into my class to read first thing in the morning. very bright but never did get her to talk. she did find a classmate and that is how she communicated.
