This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, August 27,
2009 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

Raptor migration is definitely underway or at least close. Any day in
the northwest one can spot groups of raptors, either hunting or perched
awaiting a thermal. On August 22, Shelley Steva and I counted AMERICAN
KESTRELS and RED-TAILED HAWKS in Pennington, Red Lake, and Polk
Counties. We came up with 2 American Kestrels and 3 Red-tailed Hawks in
Pennington, 3 American Kestrels and 4 Red-tailed Hawks in Red Lake, and
11 American Kestrels and 29 Red-tailed Hawks in Polk County for a total
of 16 American Kestrels and 35 Red-tailed Hawks.

Shelley Steva saw 50 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS on August 23 in Clearwater County
near Shevlin.

The weekend shorebird survey at Agassiz NWR in Marshall County tallied
just 285 birds of 11 species in much wetter habitat than the previous
week. A highlight was the sighting of a mammal - a bobcat sunning itself
by the ditch at Farmes Pool.

In Pennington County on August 22, a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was seen along
Pennington Ave south of Thief River Falls. Tiffany Wessel reported an
OSPREY flying over the Red Lake River near Thief River Falls on August
22, while Teresa Audette observed a BALD EAGLE west of the city.

In Red Lake County near Oklee, Anita Vettleson reported several
RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS coming to her feeder this week. Shelley Steva
and I found several shorebirds in Red Lake County including two
RED-NECKED PHALAROPES at the Red Lake Falls wastewater treatment plant.
Several other species were seen there as well as at a farmer's pond east
of Red Lake Falls.

Sandy Aubol saw a few warblers in Polk County at the campground in East
Grand Forks on August 21 including TENNESSEE WARBLER, BLACKBURNIAN
WARBLER, and AMERICAN REDSTART. Shelley Steva saw an OLIVE-SIDED
FLYCATCHER near Lengby on August 23, another was seen at Glacial Ridge
on August 22. Also at Glacial Ridge on August 22, we saw a SWAINSON'S
HAWK and several COMMON RAVENS.

Thanks to Anita Vettleson, Shelley Steva, Teresa Audette, and Tiffany
Wessel for their reports.

Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than
Thursday each week, at [email protected] OR call the Detroit Lakes
Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders
please call 847-9202. Please include the county where the sighting took
place. The next scheduled update of this report is Thursday, September
3, 2009.
