ahhh spring... This morning we had a dozen Wood Ducks in the open water between the ice and shore. The available houses have all been cleaned and prepared for them. The squirrels have yet to move out of theirs. Canada Geese have staked out their territories days ago on the ice and the Mallards showed up when the first puddles formed along the shore several days ago.
We had a large V of Tundras fly over the house on Saturday as I was out cleaning the gardens finding earthworms, woolly bears, and centipedes. First flowers should be blooming today. The silver maple in the yard is in full bud or maybe flower. I will have to look. I saw my first butterfly a week ago, probably a Mourning Cloak, but I was going to fast. Spent some time driving around on Sunday looking for Great Horned Owls and found few birds of note. Horned Larks were everywhere, but mostly in pairs already on territory. Several pairs of Bluebirds were at farmsteds. Mourning doves, blackbirds, grackles, cowbirds, and Killdeer were seen or heard.
