With the snow, birds were more congregated along the roadsides this morning.
I counted 52+ Horned Larks, 70+ Snow Buntings, and 1 Lapland Longspur. There
were probably more than this but birding from my car was proving to be
difficult. Waterfowl this morning in the area(though I didn't trudge through
the snow to check a couple locations) were Canada Geese, Trumpeter Swan,
Wigeon, Shoveler, Redhead, Ring-necked Duck, Bufflehead, Hooded Merganser,
Common Loon, and Coot. There was a lingering Fox Sparrow at Rapids Lake MVWNR
along with a few Red-winged Blackbirds, and a female Northern Harrier
was still hunting fields in rural Carver County. A large chunk of
waterfowl(mainly Canvasback, Redhead, and Ring-necked duck) left earlier in the
week. Most gulls have left the area as well. There were still a few
Ring-billed around Lake Waconia. On friday I found a Franklin's and some
Bonaparte's on some rural lakes, and a Herring Gull was at Lake Waconia on
Thursday. Possibly my last Bluebird and Golden-crowned Kinglet of the year
were seen on Thursday at Carver Park.
