At 3:30 pm Anne checked our video camera and saw that an Eastern Screech Owl was sleeping in our larger Wood Duck box. This is the first time we have seen one this season. I can't tell from the black and white image if it is red or gray phase. Last years owl was gray.
As in past years, it may sit at the hole before flying out after dusk. Oh, at 3:45 pm the owl is now sitting in the entry hole. It is a gray phase. You can see the box from the street by parking across from the Blue Spruces at the southwest corner of our house. If you stay in your car the owl will ignore you. We also have heard Great Horned and Barred Owls calling very nearby during the past few days.
