The 65th Cedar Creek Bog Christmas Bird Count was held on Sunday (12/19). Preliminary results for the day was 37 species including: Evening Grosbeak (first time since 1992) - a flock of 8 were found south of Isanti along CR23. I am awaiting a better location description. Raven - 6 birds (ties highest number) Red-headed Woodpecker - 35 birds (ties highest number). Bufflehead - 2nd time Belted Kingfisher
Cold weather resulted in almost no open water and only two ducks (and one otter). Winter visitors were sparce with virtually no winter finches. while some woodpeckers Downies, Hairies, and Flickers were well below usual numbers, others (Pileated, Red-headed, and Red-bellied) were close their highest totals. Chickadees (538) were at their 2nd highest and Mourning Doves set a new record (147). Notible misses included Ruffed Grouse, Mallard, Am. Robin, Barred Owl, Redpoll (count week), Cedar Waxwing, and Golden Crowned Kinglet (count week).
