At 9:00 am the owl is sleeping in the Wood
Duck box. Perhaps the owl will sun itself
mid-day or late afternoon.

You can see the box from the street by
parking across from the Blue Spruces at
the southwest corner of our house. If you
stay in your car the owl will ignore you.

We have not seen the owl since Dec. 22.

We have installed a Barred Owl box on a tree
about 60 feet northeast of the Wood Duck box.
The entry hole on that box faces east. It does
not yet have a video camera installed. We have
not seen any owls at that box yet. We did see a
Barred Owl sit in that tree several times in the
past. I don't think you will see that box entry from
the street.
Good Luck,

Unusual Location:  I saw a Snow Goose land with a flock of Canada Geese in =
the Columbia Arena parking lot in Columbia Heights (Anoka County.)  Tough A=
noka County Bird=2C but what was more unusual was that at the time I was en=
tering Locke Park & thinking to myself 'wouldn't that be cool if a Snow Goo=
se showed up here with Canada Geese' and then it happened.  Good thing I go=
t pictures or I would have thought I imagined the whole event.

New Brighton Rough-Legged Hawks:  Another Rough-Legged Hawk has found out h=
ow wonderful this field is & is also seen here frequently.  I've seen the 2=
RL's fight each other the last 2 days=2C with an all-out brawl on the grou=
nd occurring yesterday (and just now out of the corner of my eye=2C there t=
hey are chasing each other again.)  There has been some snow plowing in the=
fields that doesn't bother the birds at all=2C in fact they both caught ro=
dents near the plow yesterday.  The RLs are pretty dependable=2C most of th=
e time perched on the 'r' pipes in the field or in the trees across Old Hig=
hway 8=2C along Long Lake=2C though when the temperature was below zero=2C =
they were in the field less frequently.  I failed to mention in my last pos=
t that there were Snow Buntings in this field a week & a half ago but I hav=
en't seen them since.  I also saw a Female Dark-Phase RL here last week tha=
t wasn't seen again (the 2 current RL's here are Male Light-Phase.)
The location is Old Highway 8 (same as 5th Ave NW) between 694 & 14th St NW=
.  Views of the Hawks perched on the pipes are best from 14th St NW & the s=
ervice road that runs South from 14th St NW (right in front of the long bui=
lding on the edge of the field.)  For directions=2C Google Map this address=

At 11:15 am I looked out the window and saw the
owl is now sitting in the entry hole. Sunlight is
hitting the owl. A good photo op! It is a gray phase.

Chickadees spotted the owl and drove it down into the box. They
were even clinging to the entry hole and giving alarm calls.

The Chickadees have forgotten about the owl now, 11:35 am. The
yard is quiet. Maybe the owl will come up to sit in the entry hole
off and on - Chickadees are pretty observant.

As in past years, it may sit at the hole before flying out after dusk.

You can see the box from the street by parking across from the Blue
Spruces at the southwest corner of our house. If you stay in your car
the owl will ignore you.

The Minnesota DNR is seeking input as it starts work on a Comprehensive
Conservation Management Plan for federal lands leased by the state in the
Beltrami Island State Forest/Red Lake WMA area. There will be three public
open houses, two this week (in Baudette and in Warroad) and one next week
(in Bloomington). More information and public comment forms can be obtained
by visiting the project website at www.beltramiisland.info.
