This morning I birded north of Aitkin along County Road 1 and found a female BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER working on some tamaracks on the west side of the road about 7 & 3/10 miles north of the diversion ditch bridge. There were also about a dozen PINE GROSBEAKS in the same area. Also along C.R. 1 were three small flocks of SNOW BUNTINGS, a BALD EAGLE, RAVENS and a NORTHERN SHRIKE. There have been a lot of COMMON REDPOLLS showing up at local feeders, including mine. I received a report of a GREAT GRAY OWL sitting on a fence post along 360th Street which is east of Aitkin, between Aitkin and Rossberg (seen about 3 miles from town). I have been out to look but haven't seen it yet. Hulda Lind reports that her YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER is still well and she has had up to 12 BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES coming to her suet feeders.
