Butch Ukura and I birded around Aitkin County this afternoon and found several interesting things. We found 3 GREAT GRAY OWLS along Aitkin County Road 18. The first was 4/10 of a mile east of highway 169, the second was at 3 and 3/10 miles east of highway 169 and the third was 3 and 8/10 miles east of highway 169 ( or 2/10 of a mile west of Pietz's Road). We found a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER on Pietz's Road about 1 mile north of C.R. 18 (the bird flew from the east and landed on a dead snag in front of us on the west side of the road). We found a classic, very white HOARY REDPOLL in a small flock of COMMON REDPOLLS about a half mile south of the town of Swatara on C.R.29. We also found a BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE near Gun Lake south of Palisade, a GRAY JAY, 2 NORTHERN SHRIKES, several small flocks of SNOW BUNTINGS, several PINE GROSBEAKS, COMMON REDPOLLS and a RUFFED GROUSE.
